I'm sure that now GRRM would admit his mistake because all good scholars know that medieval Europe had blaqs all over the place.
I ran across someone who said that but I hadn’t done any research but everything I read said it would’ve been very rare to see an African the further north you got in Europe and Southern Europe maybe a few more due to proximity to Northern Africa plus it was part of Roman Empire. But this dude told me there were black people in high positions of European houses. I also fed at that. Maybe some traders or I know Europe was aware of Mansa Musa and I think some trade was done with him but everything I’ve read says it would’ve been rare. Sadly you can’t have a good period piece now.
I think it would have been more common in Roman times than in the Middle Ages. Rome caused people to move around a lot. Well, Rome caused people to be able to move around a lot with roads and whatnot. After its collapse, the world was a lot larger.
Also, IIRC Ethopia's best era was behind it by the high Middle Ages, which is what I take for the real-world inspiration for GoT
That would make sense. Thanks for clarifying
In Central/Southern Europe blacks were almost never seen until recently. I recall seeing a black and white photo (so relatively recent) of someone in Poland touching a black person in astonishment.
Even today you could visit the country and see maybe five black tourists in a city of thousands. The idea of blacks in high positions of European houses is simply ridiculous. They simply were not present in the region.
Yea it sounded ridiculous when that dude told me that. I was like what history have you been reading
