They do occasionally refer to themselves as Indian, and rarely native American, but mostly they'd say they're something like Cherokee.
Polynesian is the equivalent of saying Cherokee or Dinatah. It's the same group, bit different tribes. Especially useful when you don't want to mix up Tongan and Samoan.
It's a long story, but Polynesian is the term for a specific ocean going people who cover the ocean. There are others, and they look a lot smaller than your average poly.
