I thought it poignant that the author spends more time illustrating the reporters being attacked and their diversity badges, rather than the threats themselves and then realized its because he doesn't care about the threats but that his ideology is being attacked.
He doesn't say - we're reporting what we want, go start your own paper or don't read us. He literally buttresses this 4th grade screed with essentially "my ideas are good for you and you need to hear them because we're better than you so stop attacking us and submit."
Unfortunately, that's the necessary tactic to stir up the outrage mob and get the support they want. The threats have always been secondary to the person being threatened.
If you want the wokies to show up in absurd number and harass people until they submit, you gotta sell it the way that fires them up. And they don't care about what is said, only who it is said to.
