Long nails in some cultures are seen as signs of beauty because it implies the woman's family is rich enough that she does not need to work (and thus risk breaking her nails).

Why they would want to broadcast that they're worthless piles of meat with no productive contributions to society is beyond me, but that is indeed why they do it.
