It's unfortunately auto-translated but it's the most in-depth article I've seen so far.
tl;dr
The assassin was angry at the Moon Sect/Unification Church for ruining his familty. His mother gave everything they had to the sect to the point where they didn't have enough for food.
The sect is notorious for preying on Japanese women to bleed them dry financially and marry them to Korean men.
He couldn't get close to officials of the sect so he went after Abe who had previously endorsed them.
Ok, but to play devil's advocate, isn't this the kind of story we always hear about assasinations that may have been setup by an agency?
It's often some "nothing" bit because that's the best emptional-response they can aim for.
Are those the ones who try to give out sandwiches to foreigners, or is that a different cult that operates in Japan?
Cults are bad, but Abe wasn't involved with it at all. All he ever did was a typical politician thing of giving them a positive blub message a long time ago, which politicians do for all kinds of interest groups all the time. Murdering him for it is like murdering one of Tom Cruise's kids 50 years from now because Scientology fucked up someone's life.
Probably something glowy
