While there are true believers, many of these weirdos are just virtue signaling normies trying to stay on good terms with the in-group. I saw a video the other day pointing out how humans evolved to where "smart midwits" tend to mimic the dominant group, and if they don't believe what they're saying they fake it.

For some it also leans towards malicious compliance. They know on some level that they are working for evil and resent it, but they are too weak and cowardly to disrupt their life and reevaluate their behavior, so they do the minimum necessary to play their part. It's one reason woke goes broke, or why communist regimes spread corruption - there's not any real conviction or integrity behind most of its adherents.
