They took it several weeks after Kabul but there's an insurgency and now it's the fighting season. Recently they lost a Blackhawk shot down for example.
Iran's concentrating their tank forces on the border. But yeah, previously also did so with Azerbaijan and nothing came out of it.
I thought: well, they may live under tyrants, but at least Afghanistan will now be a stable, unitary state. Apparently not.
Was that during the Karabach thing? I believe Iran previously threatened to invade Afghanistan in 1999 or so. Nothing came of it.

No, it was after Armenia had already lost (despite weapons shipments from Iran). Iran includes an Azeri-populated territory and they have a long running spat over it. Also over how Azerbaijan rejects Iranian leadership over the Shia of the world, just like Iraq does increasingly now (especially Sadr, who ironically had sheltered in Iran after the 2006 defeat of the Mahdi Army uprising).
