I actually kind of agree that it's a "normal" deviation. And just to be clear, I don't mean that it's normal, and I don't mean that it's desirable or positive. What I mean is that thre do seem to be men who dress up as women in most or all cultures, and across history. Like u/thepalagoon said, historically, it's frequently been the realm of straight men who dress up. The Bible specifically calls out men who wear women's clothing (and vice versa)! If that hadn't been a thing back then, there would have been no reason to mention it. There are examples in Islamic lands (male dancers), India (Hijra), Roman/Greece, etc.

IMHO, people "break" in predictable ways. E.g., One of the common ways women break is becoming hoarders.

One of the ways men can "break" is becoming a transvestite.

What I don't understand is how it went from being entirely underground / fringe / weird to idolized and praised in America in about 20 years.
