Perhaps unpopular, but he had to know this was going to happen when he said it. I know when I spoke up during my DIE training I expected to be fired.
If your fine is way more than the median household makes in a year, you're going to be OK. I hope he realizes he has "fuck you" money and can say what he wants. Sadly most people who could have "fuck you" money never realize they do in fact have it, which is why you see multi-millionaires make such cowardly statements after they've committed wrongthink.

Maybe. Then again many millionaires who would bend the knee have the desire to keep making $ and will reject anything that prevents them from it, including their conscience. You see it all the time--ethics taking a back seat to profits.
I have just entered a high-powered industry. For sure, one of the ONLY things that could get me fired at this stage is speaking out at a DIE training. The other thing is speaking out against woke idiocy at a work outing. Everyone else is allowed to whine about a lack of non-gendered bathrooms or how people aren't using the right woke words (like partner instead of boyfriend/girlfriend, despite this being VERY confusing). I have to just grin and nod, despite this kind of thing happening in a friendly, alcohol-infused environment, where one might be otherwise expected to be able to at least offer an authentic opinion. It is highly toxic and sickening.

Sadly, he doesn't seem to know the game. He apologized.

True but if it was the case that he just wanted to make money he wouldn't have said anything at all, or simply read from the approved script.
That he deviated from the script at all suggests he still has some integrity
On this note:

This is correct, but this is exactly what free speech is supposed to protect from: Retaliation from more powerful entities than yourself.
