And that's just Western society in general. Japanese culture has its own quirks. They went the "men can go their own way" route when it comes to child support, so a guy can just be a sperm donor if he wants, with no obligation. BUT women still have all the rights when it comes to raising that child. If the guy WANTS to be a father, the woman has to give permission. She is allowed to keep sole custody herself or raise the baby as another man's child without consent from the biological father. So I was surprised by this interpretation of the abortion law.

There had been controversy for years (when news actually covered these things instead of fake controversies) about parent "abductions" where the Japanese mother of a mixed baby would break up with the father and no longer let him see the child. Japanese law is ok with this. So occasionally the American father and his family will kidnap their baby and bring it back home with them. Japanese law is NOT ok with that, but American law is. So it was kind of an international disagreement. I'm not sure but I think US law finally cucked to the Japs and agreed to go after the men. Someone would have to confirm.
