I mean, I like TF2 media and fanworks and watching people play and talk about it, even though I'm not a fan of playing FPSs.

Of course, I also recognize that I'm a tertiary fan at best and have no place in dictating how the game should be played or patched.

Spot on. If someone tells you they're a fan, but wants to change what they're supposedly a fan of, then they're not a fan- they are lying to you.
