I think the whole idea is that the current baseball season is lacking a big story after the massive strike so they're throwing a washed up player under the bus to try and stir some drama. Viewership is waaaay down for them, so the best thing they can hope for is this getting national media attention and clueless sheep watching just so they can jeer the "racist" yankee player.
