People place Christians groups on the right because they don't actually understand political reality and default to the traditional left/right dichotomy (or they just want to smear anyone they disagree with). This framework assumes people either flow to the left towards collectivist authoritarianism or to the right towards nationalist authoritarianism. That's not how things work. The far-left and far-right have more in common with one another than classical liberals in the center. The true dichotomy is between authoritarianism and libertarianism.
Libertarianism (classical liberals, conservatives, libertarians) are on one side and authoritarianism (socialists, communists, fascists) on the other. People slide down the hill towards authoritarianism through enticement, moral decay and human nature. Libertarianism requires constant diligence and maintenance to protect it from authoritarians, which is why things generally always slide in one direction.
Thanks for the breakdown. I tend to be libertarian on most things.
