We want to see ourselves represented in games, we want the barriers to access lowered, and we want games to be a welcoming environment for all. Just look at the 2019 International Game Developers Association (IGDA) “Developer Satisfaction Survey,” which asked developers what they considered to be the most important factor in the growth of the gaming industry. The most common response? “More diversity in content.” It’s not even a question anymore.
Y'know what is a pressing question though? Who the fuck taught you how to read if that's the only interpretation of the phrase "more diverse content" you can think of?
There are so many assumptions they've made here that drawing any conclusions is ridiculous.
As you point out, that's incredibly open to interpretation. But even "growth" is ambiguous. Does it mean a bigger market? More sales in general? It could even be taken to mean such bullshit as "moral growth" or as a synonym for a nebulous idea of "maturity" as we've seen some people try to push on games.
We're also assuming that the IGDA's sample is representative of the industry (and not, say, indie devs). And that developers have perfect knowledge of what players want.
And for fuck's sake, if "it’s not even a question anymore" it wouldn't be a question on the survey, would it?
