The first series is good, if you like Harry Potter and things like that it would be up your alley. The second series has some horrible "Dumbledore is gay" type trash in it. The first series is self-contained as it is, so I say just read that and don't go any further.
Are the books worth reading? If I get them second hand?

I loved the Potter books. How many books is the first series?
Five, but none of them are terribly long from what I can remember (It's been a long time). The first series is called Percy and the Olympians BTW.
I've heard that the first series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians is good. I've heard mixed things about the later series's.
The first book was the most blatant Harry Potter rip-off you can imagine.
Worse than that, it was boring.
