I know someone who sent his son overseas to go to some bullshit "prestigious" college. He's so proud that his son is spending probably $75,000 a year to get a liberal arts degree.
He's, of course, a boomer. They still think a college degree is the pinnacle of human achievement, and the more expensive the degree, the better. He's brainwashed his children into thinking the same. By the time they're old though to know better, they'll have been saddled with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, delaying their ability to become financially independent by at least 20 years.
It's going to be another generation or two before the ingrained worship of universities dies off, and at that point so too will the universities themselves.
Why do white kids even go to college at this point? Paying money to be guilt tripped for four years sounds like anti-fun.

In their time people without degrees often found their jobs moved to another continent.
Also, you could work a job over the summer and pay for the entirety of your college.
They really want to believe it's still that time and nothing has changed.
