Why doesnt the South maintain their own interstates?

Is some weird Reconstruction law still in effect that stops them?

Nobody maintains their own interstates, because the interstate is owned by the federal government and you're not allowed to.

Because federal taxes are so high that state taxes have to be low. No one that might increase state taxes has a chance at election, whereas they have no control over federal bullshit.

If they didn’t pay so much in federal taxes it wouldn’t be a problem.
