they literally believe the world is going to end in X number of years
Technically that isn't wrong, it's just going to be a number so high not even Keith Richards will be about by then.
Really what they're harping on about is the planet becoming unsustainable for human life but even if our species dies off that won't be the end of life on Earth, even were it to involve a nuclear winter.
The current Anthropocene extinction is still only the 6th such event the planet is theorised to have experienced and while humans might speed things up a bit global extinctions happened and recovered long before mammals were even a contender for apex predators.
Even just the patterns of the planet getting warmer or colder aren't a new thing and we're still not even out of the last ice age that occurred.
Long before the time the Earth gets stripped of its oceans by the Sun expanding, provided there is still civilisation several hundreds of thousands of years from now, the "humans" studying us will probably classify us as a different ancestor species.
But it's also likely we go extinct at some point before that. And also likely civilisation is lost and comes around several times.
We digitalized so much that losing the capacity or will to maintain the infrastructure to make new computers to keep this thing running as older machines decay would crash our current ( Western ) way of life.
"Blueprints" for plenty of our advanced technology is no longer found in print format.
