Recently finished Babylon 5
posted 3 years ago by Smith1980 3 years ago by Smith1980 +23 / -0

I loved the show, but I have a question, did Sheridan actually die? Or was he supernatural? Also, I need to see the movies that were made and are there any books or comic books in that universe

I loved the show, but I have a question, did Sheridan actually die?

He took the Straight Road to Aman.

Sheridan after Za'ha'dum is basically Gandalf the White.

Ohhh ok. Thanks! I was confused because his shop filled with light and then he was gone.

Remember, Babylon 5's main story premise is basically "Arthurian Legend in Space".

You can see bits of Tolkien's influence mixed in too.

In Thirdspace we learn that the Vorlons tried to transcend the universe, open a doorway to the beyond... and they succeeded. And only barely managed to get it closed again before what they found on the other side could destroy everything.

And the previous Captain became one of the aliens. Now that you mention it I can see it

He died three times before the end.

The first time when he went to Zha'ha'dum and fell into the abyss.

The second time is at the bottom of the abyss after his talk with Lorien, the curious being that he is, who brought Sheridan back but only for a short period of time as Lorien wasn't really sure what he was doing at that point with a human life yet so that second life was a brief flare.

The third death is when they force Ulkesh [the other Vorlon] out his suit and the remains of Kosh battle until both destroy each other and the Vorlon transport ship.

This is the point the 20 more years timer starts for Sheridan.

When that time comes we see [season 5 finale, originally shot at the end of season 4] how Sheridan spends his last remaining moments surrounded by those still left from the days of B5 and at the very end "goes out to sea", and travels to Coriana VI heeding Kosh's message about "When the long night comes, return to the end of the beginning."

Coriana VI is where the final Shadow War ends and all the remaining First Ones ['the beginning'] leave the known galaxy for beyond the Outer Rim.

When Sheridan arrives there his body is failing as his snub nose White Star onboard ship computer mentions and just before he dies Lorien appears before him and spirits him away.

Sheridan's body is never found and this helps strengthen his myth that he's still out there, because he probably is, amongst the First Ones who are mostly all incorporeal/immortal beings by that point and along with Lorien likely have the power to either "Ascend" Sheridan to a similar state or at least do something to keep him going. While it takes a further million years or so for humans to "naturally" evolve to the point [as we see in the season 4 finale] they still don't travel past the Rim themselves just yet, instead travelling to their new homeworld, which turns out to be the Vorlon homeworld, as Sol goes nova.

Also, I need to see the movies that were made and are there any books or comic books in that universe

There's a viewing order kicking around in places and since you've seen the core story at least you don't have to worry about any spoilers however some of the content is technically now behind stuff you've now watched: https://i.stack.imgur.com/glTFC.png

As per the comment in the thread I posted yesterday about Ezra Miller going nuts, stuff written by JMS is very good so to the surprise of nobody with a clue B5 is very well done and extremely enjoyable throughout, albeit possibly let down by the aged CGI - which really could be redone/updated for all the space combat parts however the live action bits would be harder, like the Vorlons in their true forms.

One of the sad things about the show now is realising just how many of the cast have since died.

JMS confirmed the "New Earth" that humanity moves to as shown in the season 4 finale is the Vorlon homeworld.

Death is only permanent if you are allowed to go into the afterlife of Babylon 5. Remember when Lita watched a dead Ranger enter the hyperspace portal? Or the Soul Hunters capturing souls at the moment of death? The 'soul' according to Babylon 5 is a living entity itself. The flesh is just your form until you move on. Beyond the Rim is a state beyond our understanding, but not completely removed from the universe we inhabit. They don't go into detail whether this is the same place as where the soul goes after death, but it is implied they are similar once the race reaches a certain level of evolution.

So, yes, his body died, but no, he did not die, he 'evolved' like Talia's ex-lover Marcus and joined Lorian beyond the rim.
