One thing I like about the futures of the past is the blind spots. Starship Troopers had powers suits with CRTs in the back of the head and optics to put the image in front of the pilot. This book has an above human intelligent computer controlling an analog circuit switched phone network. He was almost there with the voder/vocoder and the statement about human speech just being combinations of hisses.
Such anachronisms are one of the things I love the most about old sci-fi. Especially when they keep the series going to the modern era (or reboot it) but keep the old conventions, like the retro computer technology in Alien Isolation.
