For a show that paid homage to the 80s the reformed jock and nerdy girl romance made sense but now they had to subvert expectations and make her gay. I get what you are saying. He did seem disappeared but it’s clear that the show is following the modern day trend of pushing the women to the front. I don’t have Netflix anymore so I won’t be watching.
I don't think it was subverting expectations, I think it was a joke on the jock. "Yeah, you're in the right position now, but you were a dickhead for a long time. So, fuck you still."
I don't think it was punishment for being a dick, I think it was more like "you're a white male, so now your role is to be the sad-sack butt of the jokes."
Just like they turned the Chief into a bellowing idiot in season three.
One of the reasons I enjoyed season one was that they set up Steve as the archetype "jock asshole," but then humanized him as the story progressed. That's the kind of "subversion of expectations" that I like.
Now my expectations are that any "white alpha male" character in popular entertainment is going to be turned into a buffoon who ends up as a sidekick to a strong, diverse female.
I don't expect these expectations to be subverted very often from now on.

Never had it. So I will be watching, just not on Netflix.
