Ahem, gMail does IMAP, so you don't have to check it via the web site. You can use your email client of choice and manage it without these annoying pop ups.
I use eM client on my main workstation, and have a paid license for it, but I also use Thunderbird on my laptop.

Yes I use Thunderbird. This was the rare event where I was on my Windows partition which has bare minimum software.
