He was a pay driver. He only had a spot due to the sponsorship of his family.
He also managed to place 21st in a 20 man league. He had 0 points, and a substitute driver also had 0 points. And in that case the "best placement during the season" matters. Think of like the substitute got 15th once and Mazepin's best was 17th. (made up places, you get the idea though).
Haas most likely wanted to sack the kid and used the whole russia/ukraine thingy as an excuse. I dont really condemm this action because the dude just cant adapt to f1
The general thought was the only reason he was there was for his Uralkali sponsorship that brought them a huge chunk of their budget. I'm guessing they were losing that anyway, because they weren't being allowed to run the branding on their car. Without the money, they have no use for Mazepin.
Depending on how the sanctions and asset freezing have played out, that sponsorship money may well have already dried up. At that point there's no need to keep saddling themselves with a useless driver and a sponsor who can't pay for anything.

They just renewed his contract a few months ago.
Not to mention: Their entire budget is built upon the sponsorship deal, this decision may drive them to bankruptcy.
