He's no more authoritarian than a lot of the US and definitely Canada. I don't like it, but the way I see it the US isn't that much different of an oligarchy than Russia, particularly the federal government. Perhaps the defining difference is the individual states do still try to exercise some autonomy. For all I know this happens in Russia too, but to a different degree with the dominance of the Moscow-St. Petersburg area with respect to the rest of Russia in international news.
