So as we all have seen that the Amazon LOTR based show will go down the usual representation route which wasn't a surprise. I have to admit I foolishly thought they would respect Tolkein's legacy when I first heard of this project but that was foolish. Also when they fired the lore expert that was a major red flag.
I am getting sick and tired of entertainment saying the whole "reflect the modern world" or "reflect modern society" BS. LOTR has always been for anyone who wanted to read it, and it has been translated into many languages. I remember someone once got mad at me for saying that if you need to see yourself represented in everything, then you have a problem because you can go online and look up anything or read a book on a famous female, black, Asian, latino, etc. scientist, doctor, or whatever if that is so important to you. Why shows have to cater to these morons is beyond me.
Of course Wheel of Time suffers from the same problem. In the books they meet people of different races once they go out into the larger world and women in power are all over the books but that isn't enough.
As for lgbt stuff, I have said for years... get your own channel and write your own stories if you insist that lgbt content needs to be in everything. I remember Nerdrotic responded to someone who said that not everything has to have straight people, and he said that is true but not everything needs to have gay people and in a larger point not everything has to have everything in it.
Honestly I wish they would just stop crapping on source material of much better writers than they could ever be. They should start adapting the garbage that wins the Hugo and Nebula awards.
Sorry for the rant, just so tired of it, but thankfully I have mountains of books. They can't take those away.
Not really true.
LotR was created explicitly as a sort of White Christian European folklore. The focus and theme is on carrying older philosophical and religious themes to modern readers.
It's not aimed at "anyone."
LotR is aimed at White Christian Europeans.
This is one of the many reasons why it feels so soulless when they inject all the woke garbage and cast random blacks as elves. They are quite literally ripping the soul out of the work.
I’m mostly black and I’ve always enjoyed it. I get that it’s aimed at White European Christians but there are themes that are eternal. I just meant that nothing is stoping anyone from reading the books. Now maybe I’m connecting with my European ancestry when I read it lol. But seriously that is what I mean. I enjoy learning about folklore of other cultures. And I hate how they bastardize it. But the books are always there. I’ve been a Christian since childhood so that aspect has always resonated with me
Is not aimed at white european christians, is a story that is suppose to reflect european culture and Christianity, that is true, it was suppose to be some English origin mythology. However this does not mean that it was made just for white christians from europe, that is just stupid. Is not even an European thing, it does not reflect anything related to Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece or Turkey (the 5% that is in Europe). So should those not enjoy it? What if you are a white atheist from Saudi Arabia?
I like Persian stories and I'm not from Iran, sure the stories were made by and about the people of the area but they are meant to be shared with everyone.
Not sure if I did explain things correctly but just because a story reflects a certain culture does not mean it is meant for that culture, in my opinion is the exact opposite, it's to be shared with everyone. In fact is a sign of respect to share it in the most authentic way possible.
Is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon meant to be just for the chinese?
This in turn brings about that if you plan to share it in a non-authetic way then you are showing lack of respect to the culture that inspired the author.
I completely agree. I know Tolkien wanted to reflect his culture, but I was saying that anyone could read it. Like you I enjoy reading stories from other cultures and absolutely love Crouching Tiger. I do hate how modern entertainment feels the need to "fix" or "update" great works like we are seeing now.
Yes, so Mediterraneans (if you will) and pagans had their folklore, and it was widely distributed in the Western world. He was trying to create a comparable Christian, West-western (specifically English, really) canon. That doesn't mean that he intended audience is restricted to Englishmen. He was trying to spread it as widely in the English-speaking world as Greek and Roman myths were spread.
