nah, other asian countries yes, japan no. it's extremely dishonorable to be gay/tranny in japan. shit, japan said officially that they will not honor your gender identity unless and until you go get full surgery. and since surgery results in sterility, a bunch of tranny faggots were screaming to high heavens.
but go to thailand or some other southeast asian countries and fucking trannies are everywhere. you basically get little gay beta boys realizing women get the easy life, so they'd rather "be women" instead of men.
While being gay/trans in the western way is indeed frowned upon in Japan more than in the west, gay people are accepted more and more (without being put on a pedestal).
As for trans, the "Okama", which are basically transvestites have been a popular feature of culture for a long time, with some even being major personalities in the media. However, it's mostly played for comedy rather than "empowerment".
I'm glad to say that I haven't seen much of the American-style TRA/SJW here.
I think you're both partly right. Culturally it's just completely different to the West. Like the other reply said trannies are accepted in the entertainment world, but they're not going to go to work crossdressing at a corporate office unless the boss is weirdly tolerant, and even then nobody else is expected to agree with their delusions. Nobody is going to attack you for saying Matsuko Deluxe is a fat man in drag. I mean, yeah? (the wikipedia article calls him a transvestite, but I've never seen him acting like anything but a woman and fans treat him that way)
Even Thailand is kinda based for ruling against gay/trans marriage recently, despite all the lady boys.
