You're going to be shocked, but I brew my own coffee too. I don't get the 'dedication' part. It takes 5 minutes to roast a batch. Really don't even have to look at it until I start hearing first crack.
Size of the batches is what I was referring to. I roast half-pound batches every 3 days, which for me is optimal for all sorts reasons but sometimes I wish I could roast a week's worth at a time.
With a popper I'd probably have to roast every day, or do multiple batches. Which maybe wouldn't be so bad to roast the next day's beans while you're brewing this day's, but it's nice to not have to do that.
Unless with some practice it's possible to do larger batches? Back when I tried it in college we could only roast enough at a time for a single pot.
I just roast my own, because green coffee beans last a lot longer than roasted ones; so I can buy a 6-month supply at one time.
Hard to beat the price per-pound, even when you factor in the cost of the roaster.
Still miss when Costco would roast their own in-store. Also way cheap, and if you got a bag fresh off the roaster it was amazing.
Fellow roaster. Still using that air popper I started with from sweetmarias. Had a Ethiopian Dumerson this am.
Using an air popper is some dedication. I would definitely not be roasting my own coffee if that was my only option.
