Right, I gotcha, thanks for the explanation. Oh and yeah, I remember that wikipedia scandal, that was hilarious. I can't even begin to fathom the levels of autism that guy must have.
I'm just a little bit sensitive about languages going extinct because Czech nearly met the same fate in the 18th century. We were part of Austria-Hungary, and anyone with any half-decent education was fluent in German, and... basically Czech was relegated to a sort of a "peasant language", and by 1800 it was missing a ton of modern terms. Thankfully, there was a group of Czech patriots who basically revived the language and made up a ton of terms that we still use today. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czech_National_Revival - For example, a lot of European languages name months based on Latin: January, February, etc. Even Slovak, which is a distinct but mutually intelligible language with Czech, does the same: January = Január, February = Február, etc. But, thanks to the above, we don't: in Czech, January = Leden, February = Únor, etc.
Oh yeah, I totally agree!
I don’t think we should let the languages go extinct either. I just think it’s funny that they focus on making signs in a dialect of English, that isn’t really spoken, but is completely mutually intelligible with English (hence dialect), rather than in, say, actual Irish Gaelic… Lol. Because it’s Ulster, and they want to emphasize their “Britishness” over their “Irishness”, despite, y’know, history, ethnicity AND cultural background, n all that…
But yeah, I agree. Even with the Abo shit, I think we should PRESERVE it, but palawa kani, in Tasmania, is literally a made up conlang. Like Esperanto, or modern Māori, or Modern Hebrew… Which is fine, but a) no one speaks it. b) the different Aboriginal orgs/“interest groups” can’t even agree on what words, exactly, should fit in the lexicon, OR on spelling, even of the NAME OF THE LANGUAGE ITSELF, lol (pakawa vs palawa), and c) it is literally being used to erase English place names, which is… Hilariously ironic, and a little scary.
So… Preserving languages is great, as long as it doesn’t come with that added… Politicisation, and literal erasure, I guess, IMHO… 🤷🏻♂️
I worry where my country is headed. Like South Africa, but with “black” + white leftist minority rule, this time…
But yeah, I do totally appreciate your concerns, there, fren.
Like I said, dated a Polish-Czech girl, and thought about moving there for a while (still would, but your working holiday visas only go up to 26, now, unfortunately…), so… I’m not totally ignorant of the history you speak of, I promise! 🙂
