And then releases another HG Super Fumina Maid.
Japan gonna Japan.
Probably because its them putting out mealy mouth corporate speak for investors, not actually doing anything. Remember that recently the usual suspects tried to complain about "Tales of Arise" and tried to get is censored, and Namco just said "lol, no" and released it unmodified. Same with Code Vein. Same with Tekken. Same with Scarlet Nexus. They have shown, definitively, that like many Japanese companies, their "diversity" ends when is starts effecting quality and bottom line.
…Sorry, but the mouth corporate speak was in regards to Tales of Arise, Tekken, and Scarlet Nexus.
Scarlet Nexus has VERY conservative character designs, but if you look at its artbook, you’ll actually find they were supposed to be (only a little, but still) less covered up. They changed the characters for Western (American) standards.
No bikini costumes for the newest woman character in Tekken, that’s a huge red flag given some interviews with Harada in contrast to their absence.
Arise is a huge can of worms, lots of info about how it was made for Westerners. I consider it a WRPG, and didn’t buy it because of how soulless it looked compared to the past entries. Taking inspiration from Life is Strange, the typical “slavery bad” plot you see to pander to Westerners, a dumbed-down combat system, and the cherry on top: censorship. The collaboration costumes are all censored compared to their original counterparts, and I’ve never seen the other alternate costumes you can unlock be this tame before in the series. Arise was a huge (but sad) pass for me.
saw a woke commentator going on about how Arise "evolved with the times" for having that woke storyline and for a "broader audience" and then added "though it still has its fair share of anime tropes" as if he thought anime tropes was bad and "not with the times"
I suppose we will just have to agree to disagree then. While I cant speak to Tekken (I am not a fighting game fan), I had a blast with Nexus and Arise and didnt see anything particularly "woke" about either of them. Also, even if the designs in Nexus were more conservative, the female characters still managed to be more attractive and feminine looking than ANYTHING made to woke, feminist standards.
Of course, because that's how subversion works. You censor one little thing because "at least it's not as bad as other bad thing", and it snowballs from there. You sound like the people talking about MK 10 having more conservative designs wasn't too bad, which eventually led to MK11's situation.
I know where this path leads, because we've been on it before with Western games. I just wish we weren't following it again :(
