We seriously need to end this authoritarian "top-down" medical system that has been growing in the last decade or two. That's the only reason the pandemic has been allowed to continue so long. Giant hospital systems send instructions down from high and healthcare workers are told to just follow the guidelines or else. No independent thought allowed.
Research science should exist to serve doctors and their patients, providing data that can be translated into care based on every doctor's individual assessment of the research. It should not prop up an establishment that governs national healthcare or public health. That kind of thing is easily coopted by politicians, BigPharma, or any other special interest with deep pockets and influence.
Personally I'd like to see a "separation of science and state", but that's probably a bridge too far. We just need to put power back in the hands of doctors and away from "establishment", whether that is the government, academia, insurance companies, hospital groups, or state medical boards. Every doctor should be the king of his domain, at no risk of license suspension without patient complaints. The state should have no power here.
It's not that I necessarily trust doctors, but there's enough of them out there with various opinions that free market forces can apply and they won't naturally become a centralized cabal of public health.
"But what about SNAKE OIL!!!!! We have to save people from getting scammed!"
With what we know today about how governments operate, is there anyone that still thinks dangerous and ineffective tonics weren't driven by those in pursuit of government overreach? It's just like when, during Prohibition, government deliberately contaminated alcohol in order to poison people in order to make an example of those who dared to flout the law.
