Only any therapeutic affects are basically nil. It's all enabling. These groups encourage each other to descend into their fetishes neuroses and if one of them starts to make any meaningful change for the better they pull him or her back down like they're all crabs in a bucket.
And ofc there's the ones who try to convert people into their crazy as we saw in that askmen thread yesterday.
It's all as much sad as it is sickening. Loads of mentally screwed up, miserable people out there trying to spread the misery around.
They were never really meant to "fix" anything, just make you feel better about yourself. The first "echo chambers". Yes, they should be more like, say, AA/NA, where you're finding new "friends" who also want to fix their problem, but they didn't usually turn out that way,
