I live in a place with near total mask compliance in large stores, and got nagged by an employee when I tested their zeal by letting it slip under my nose when I had both hands full of groceries on my way out.
If you're lucky and forget your mask in smaller stores the employees will "forget to notice too".
Was rooting for a trio of teenagers who ignored the employee telling them "to shop here they have to weak a mask, otherwise get out", shopped, paied their products to the fuming Karen cashier, and left.
In small towns if you are familiar with employees they will "forget" you aren't hiding your face and they "forget to put theirs back up after drinking".
Only reminded in those places to have it close to swiftly play-pretend along the sanitary theater when strangers come close.

There is nowhere sane to move to to speak French.
