The Germans understood that it was a loss regardless. If they sat and did nothing they'd still lose, except they'd lose on their home land and the Soviets would be free to continue on into Western Europe.
When the Germans made the decision to march east they did so entirely to deal enough damage to the Soviet forces that they couldn't afford a counter assault.
They also had assumed that after losing to the Allies they'd be pressed into service against the Soviets.
Instead, the Allies opened the gates and gave half of Germany to the Soviets.
And oh look proxy wars galore for years because Churchill was a fucking idiot and thought Hitler was a bigger threat than Stalin.
Churchill couldn't let Germany dominate Europe. he also saw the Soviets as a threat - one to be dealt with afterwards, but he couldn't at the end.
Germany didn't want to dominate Europe.
Hitler gave Britain many, many surrender agreements all of which basically amounted to stopping the fighting and Britain paying minor restitution.
Churchill was an idiot who allowed his cities to be bombed to assuage his own ego and placate the City of London.
Why would Britain accept that? They were the biggest power in Europe at that time.
Why would a country accept a favorable surrender agreement when they'd all but lost the war?
Better question: Why did Hitler direct his airforce to avoid bombing civilian centers when possible?
Britain lost that war. Hard. It was only because the Germans saw them as brothers that they weren't simply wiped out.
You've been watching too many Hollywood movies.
Britain was already weak by the mid 1930s. It was in no way the "biggest power" and their war and battle results shows as much.
