I just recently re-read the book, and events after Paul gets to the Fremen get kinda sparse in the book; the speed of the plot changes monumentally. I was surprised, actually, that there wasn't a lot of meat in the lead up to Paul taking over at the end.
It felt like Herbert got rushed or tired at the end, and just mailed it in after building up this elaborate plot line in the first 3/4 of the book.
