I doubt I would react at all other than to empathize with them about how weird small families are and how much harder it is to cook for 2 instead of 10.

I have no kids and nothing, but yeah, I can't cook small quantities. I either go absolute ham or just don't do it at all. If lifting the pot is easy, you're doing it wrong.
