More than 60 Secret Service officers and agents were injured near the White House this weekend

From CNN’s Jason Hoffman

The officers and agents were injured when protesters threw “projectiles such as bricks, rocks, bottles, fireworks and other items,” according to the statement. “Personnel were also directly physically assaulted as they were kicked, punched and exposed to bodily fluids.”

CNN teams were on hand for much of the protests and witnessed protesters throwing objects at officers and pulling temporary fencing away from them.

Fires burn near White House amid violent protests

BY JOHN BOWDEN - 06/01/20 07:25 AM EDT

Multiple news outlets reported that a fire erupted at historic St. John's Church, a landmark that has seen presidents attend services since the 1800s, while others nearby were set at a White House guard building and other smaller locations, including the AFL-CIO's national headquarters.

Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D)'s office did not immediately return a request for comment from The Hill. The mayor's office previously clashed with President Trump on Sunday over whether Bowser had refused to allow D.C. Metropolitan Police to aid the Secret Service during the protests, a claim denied by Bowser and not supported by the agency's statements.

"While [Trump] hides behind his fence afraid/alone, I stand w/ people peacefully exercising their First Amendment Right after the murder of #GeorgeFloyd & hundreds of years of institutional racism," she tweeted Sunday.

"My police department will always protect DC and all who are in it whether I agree with them," she added.
