Looking for a quality machine for living room play or handheld, so I can stop being a recluse in my office on the computer
I would start a retro game console collection but honestly don't have the money or time to invest in all of that.
Kind of looking for a plug and play solution. Even better if it comes with roms pre loaded. Would like if they can run the games at higher resolutions as well.
I've looked at a few on youtube but half of the videos seem sponsored or overhyped and there is so many to choose from.
Looking for one that runs most of the emulators pretty well. Gamecube, Dreamcast, Ps2, PsP, Ps1 and others but those are the ones I prefer the most.
Thanks fellow weebs
I know I can run a lot of these on my note ultra but I just would like something more dedicated than that.
The timing issues of emulating the emotion engine largely stemmed from the early two core x86's. Once quad cores became ubiquitous, it became a lot more reliable because you aren't fighting the OS for cpu time.
People use the Raspberry Pi with Retropie, but it can't handle anything with a higher performance requirement than PSX
PS Vita is pretty good for everything up to PSX, plus you have the entire PSP and Vita library.
Those higher end ones like Gamecube and PS2 just don't work all that well on almost any ready-to-go TV box I'm aware of. I've heard an Xbox Series S or X in dev mode is a killer high end emulation box. You don't have to hack it, just switch it to dev mode and install RetroArch.
Anything you can buy specifically for emulation doesn't seem to do that great over a PS1. Most popular solution there is a Raspberry Pi with Retropie. I personally use a Shield TV with Retroarch. If you want preloaded ROMs, you're going to have to go to some weird Chinese pirate thing or one of the official releases like PS1 classic, Genesis Mini, etc.
I know you said not a ton of config, but another cool thing that isn't that hard to set up and super cheap is a hacked Wii. They are super easy to hack and will run Gamecube stuff natively. Yes, you can run ROM files. There's also emulators for most old 2D consoles.
