When socialists decide that something is important, they sacrifice their resources to it. They have planned economies for a reason, and accept the problems that come with it to achieve those issues. Hitler believed that if he didn't eradicate the Jews from Europe entirely, then they would utterly destroy Europe until there was nothing left. Not only did they use fuel, they used men, they used ammunition, they used policing forces, they used railway cars and time, damn near up to the very end of the war because they believed what they were doing was of monumental importance and a heroic good for the world.
You'll notice that Stalin also had no problems purging his own military during active military campaigns, and also massacred thousands of Polish officers at Khatyn despite the fact that he could have absorbed them into the Soviet Army.
These Polish officers have been investigated and declared implacable enemies of Soviet people and sentenced to death by the speedy troika "trials". In absence and secretly.
Others have been spared, for one reason or another. They then went either Anders or Berling from various prisons and camps. (They of course included Anders and Berling themselves.)
