Its 12 years now? We've had only 10 left for the last 30-ish years.
According to Al Gore I should be under water as I write this
According to Al Gore HIS beach front properties should be under water now.
HIs property is up on a cliff so every bit of ice could melt on Earth and he's still have beach front property. There's actually surprisingly little land that would be lost, all those maps that show half the country underwater are pure fantasy.
Back in the 80s they were telling us the oceans would be empty of fish in 10 years. Back in the 90s they were telling us we would run out of oil in 20 years. When I was a kid in school in the 70s, they told us we would run out of water in just a few years.
Early 2000's they ran the shit about the ozone too.
I distinctly remember propaganda stories we had to read about how if you want to go to the beach to make sandcastles you would have to wear a bunch of protective equipment, and that it was just for sandcastles because going in the water made it worse or something.
Three types of sunscreen. One for the sea, one for sand, one for underclothing. All in their varying SPF values. Just so they can justify selling each at different prices ng prices points for "fashion" when all you need is 50 and done.
In this one I'm remembering they had the kiddos put on some kind of outer rubber coat and goggles or something to make it seem even more dystopic. I think it was told from the perspective of the kid's mom who was trying her darnedest to give her kids a relatively normal beach experience despite the dangers.
I also remember them saying something like "we could tolerate the sun's rays for a short time without the equipment, which we did just to enjoy the beach air for a moment, but only for a short time".
100% blatant turbo propaganda. At least 15 years later and literally nothing's changed.
early 2000s elementary school i remember watching a video about how we'll need to wear hazmat suits to play baseball
I got the water propaganda too, second hand form.
Teacher said: "When I was a kid my teacher told me that we could run out of water, and we said how could you run out of water, you turn on the tap and there's tons of it. Now we're not so sure."
It's now over 20 years since then, and likely around 50 since you and my teacher were originally sold the line.
You can still turn on the tap and get tons of water. Water levels in the great lakes are higher then they've been in decades. Probably more beachfront property got damaged by the fresh drinkable water than rising sea levels.
and their constant insistence that i, an american man, must sacrifice so china and india can continue to be the world leaders in pollution.
One post I read was like "If the world was really going to go extinct in 50 years they'd just detonate a few nukes and shut down the internet and tv for good". Think about how many millions of dollars and everything goes into making movies for no reason. Ban films ban tvs ban computers, suddenly we're shipping a shit ton less plastics and metals and less manufacturing. But that's not what it is about, it's about making people scared, so ban straws.
