There's only two things preventing the flights from being automated right now: regulations, and public perception. Turn the public against the pilots and the regulation changes will magically appear out of thin air.
They will never go full automated for the same reason truck drivers will never go full automated. Companies will need a scapegoat human to blame, and can use "human error" as an out for liability.
