And this is why “they” is awful as a pronoun. I take this to mean that the suspect tried to get back in his (or their) vehicle. But it could mean that the police officers tried to get back into their vehicle.
I mean, it’s really not that hard to figure out with context clues
There have been major court cases, multi-multi-million dollars, over the use of the oxford comma, or lack thereof, in contracts.
Context clues are great, but clear writing is even better.
This isn’t a court case. It’s a news story about the police shooting someone.
Why would the police try to arrest a guy, then randomly try to get back to their squad car, then randomly shoot the guy? Did you think they had one foot in the door then decided to pop one off from thirty feet away?
