I had a friend growing up whose dad worked on the Jersey turnpike as a toll collector. He'd occasionally mention the "monster people" who came through during the graveyard shift. They looked like people at a glance, he'd say, but after a second you'd notice something very wrong. Their faces weren't right, their skin was too smooth. The best way he could articulate it was that they looked like something wearing a mask to look human. A few other toll workers had seen them as well, but their money was good and in the end it sounded crazy talking about it out loud.

Late at night I wonder if there's a hellhole in the earth these things crawl out of. They're handed a mask and they head to the cities.
