It's an interesting thing here how the native Crimean Tatars (who were mostly ethnic Greeks and Goths) knew how to have successful agriculture using limited water resources from wells. The Russians then expelled most of them after the Crimean War and their replacement peasant settlers didn't know how to do it, leading to complaints from local authorities about how they now miss these Tatars.
