They don't see it that way. In their worldview they are the good guys, fighting against our manifestation of evil of greed and heartlessness, which in our terms, is just wanting to do what is best for ourselves, the individual. We don't see the world the same way and it's infuriating to try to live with each other.
I don't think he meant freedom itself is actually a meme. He meant that in the mainstream people don't talk about freedom truthfully these days. Saying the American military fights for freedom is a joke - it's obviously all about special interests. There hasn't been a war for freedom since perhaps the Civil War - which the freedom fighters lost, by the way.
