Here's the link to the story over at Bleeding Fool that gives their take on the story.
tl;dr: DC is trying to do like Marvel did where they're pushing a newer, younger, more "diverse" version of the heroes, but with the same names as the old ones, in their crossover event "Future State".
I'll let you read the story if you want, but here's some highlights:
-
Wonder Woman being replaced by a Brazilian woman
-
Batman will also likely be replaced with a diversity hire
-
From the promo art, it looks like The Flash is going to be replaced by a woman with prosthetic legs (I wish I was making this up)
-
Aquaman is getting replaced by Kaldur'ahm from Young Justice
Now, granted, this is only supposed to be for a couple months, but it has all the markings of a SocJus shit-show. Sadly, all the specu-leeches that still exist in the comics world will still snap these things up like a fat kid on a tray of cupcakes because ZOMG FIRST APPEARANCE, but we all know how well that goes for the market.
RIP DC comics. You were supposed to be the savior, but you turned out to be just as corrupt as Marvel did.
mother of god.... please make it stop
I can't wait for the cross-promotion in Battlefield VI.
And you just know the plot excuses they're going to make. "She was a runner before she lost her legs in %HEROIC_INCIDENT_WHERE_SHE'S_THE_SAVIOR% and then the Speed Force chose her to be the next Flash because the Speed Force is Female!"
Damn, I think I threw up in my mouth a little bit while writing that.
Will the spergs that lap this up don't know this was done before with Calvin Ellis, who was first featured in Final Crisis. For the most part he has the same origin as Clark Kent in being sent to Earth by Jor-El and being raised by a family to be the boy scout we know Superman to be. Only difference is that he became the President of the United States. This is also the same universe where Nubia was also Wonder Woman. Earth-23 for those interested.
Alternate Earths and Elseworlds I can handle. They're supposed to be fun, "What If" takes on the continuity that don't affect the current plotlines, crossovers notwithstanding. What I have beef with is them trying to do the whole fem-Thor bait-and-switch, with a "oh, no, this is your 'Batman' and 'Wonder Woman' now, the name is just their title, nudge nudge" look on their faces. If they want to pull this shit in current continuity, they need to give them new names and unrelated origins.
You mean Super Obama?
Ugh, Amazons don't have anything to do with "the Amazon". A-mazon means "no breast", as part of their story included the ridding of themselves of a breast for to be better archers. The South American jungle just looks like a pretty good place to find weird primitive people who just might think like that. But they're 100 per cent from GREEK culture.
But then, look at how the university fraternities/sororities CAN'T EVEN PRONOUNCE GREEK LETTERS CORRECTLY.
The bullshit retcon they're trying to foist off on the readers is that the Amazons from the Greek side of things weren't actually insular and stayed on their island, but instead sent out exploration parties to different areas of the world, and the new WW is descended from one of those explorers that apparently decided to hook up with the locals or some shit. Ergo, she's not even full-Amazon, but somehow she's going to magically inherit the mantle of being Wonder Woman. I can suspend a lot of disbelief when it comes to comic books, but the least the bastards could do is be consistent in their storylines. Hell, I'd even accept that the exploration party made their own clay statue that had stood as a monument in their Amazon-basin version of Themiscyra and the gods decided to activate it as the new WW, but nope, we get someone who is magically blessed by her whatever-amazon-percentage bloodline.
/Googles Brazilian Woman"
Yeah, I like what I see. Talk to you guys later.
TBF, the good looking Brazilian women are hot AF, so I'll grant you that one. DC has gone for the dark Latina look, that way they can guarantee people know the new WW is a POC. Apparently being Wonder Woman is now a thing that gets passed around to people of Amazonian descent, kinda like being the Slayer was in the Buffy-verse. Let's hear it for swinging the retcon bat on that one.
I have to admit I liked kaldur a lot, especially since they didn't completely remove Garth and kept him around as a character in his own right. Even if young justice did take a really cringy turn towards pushing this nu-left culture in an otherwise good season. But I'd put down money for this lasting 6 months if every other attempt is something to go by.
Hey DC, remember when your fans where outraged by replacing blue beetle with a Hispanic character or when the fourth Robin was a girl? No? Huh, its almost like if you let these characters gain fans though good writing and solid stories it makes a bigger impact than shoehorning them into a role.
It's not even going to be a six months thing. They're slating it for a two month takeover, and then the prior storylines will resume after that. They're basically bumping two months' worth of content on the calendar for a chance at a quick sales pop and to float a trial balloon to see if readers will bite on the new characters or if there will be backlash on it. They know that two months is the limit on sales bumps for new characters because everyone wants to grab the first issue of a new series or a character's first appearance, then sales numbers usually get cut in half for the second issue, and then in half again for the third issue. If they only run it for two then they miss the 3rd issue drop as well as being able to weather the storm on a potential blow-up.
What they're missing is the other general backlash over it being a huge shared world event. Sure, there will be some sales boosted from it, but overall readers have become more apathetic to "event" storylines and the required cross-buy to get the whole story.
Also, for what it's worth, I do recall there being a little bit of rumbling from the BB and Batgirl fans back in the day when they introduced Jaime or Cassandra, but you're right, eventually the storytelling won the readers over.
Hah I was talking about steph but Cassandra Cain is another great example. I also recall backlash but mostly stemming from how ted died at the hands of a nonsensical twist and for batgirl it was more bait and switching huntress. It's just that there was no pressitutes to kick the sexism Hornets nest.
