He admitted it because Trump told the FBI to investigate it -- and they announced they would.
It'd be far more damaging for him -- plus a much higher risk of other stuff exposed -- than it would be to simply own up to the truth.
Trump needs to do more of this "take virtue signalers at their word and have the Feds investigate them" thing.
"Oh you don't think you pay enough taxes? OK I'll send an IRS auditor right over to look at your finances for the past decade and determine how much in back taxes you owe."
"Oh your hiring practices are rooted in white supremacy? OK I'll send someone from the Department of Labor over to depose your executive staff and audit your HR procedures."
"Oh you don't think you rent enough apartment units to 'people of color'? OK I'll send someone from Housing and Urban Development over to audit your rental applications and leasing procedures, and depose your property managers to determine the extent to which Equal Opportunity in Housing regulations were violated."
I get frustrated sometimes about the whole "15 FBI Special Agents to investigate a noose" thing, but they completely nipped that story in the bud.
