Edit: In 2016, the Republican establishment wanted to rally around someone who would protect their interests against Trump. Problem for them was that the #2 in the Republican primary polls was Ted Cruz who was no ally of the establishment. So the establishment waffled around in TDS failing to provide a real offer to the people. Trump cornered the populist market in the Primary, choking out Ted Cruz's constitutionalist appeal (The constitution is for the people, so there's the overlap).
