Remember those were the lead up to the midterms and full on "Trump is running concentration camps for children and gassing families" along with Kavanaugh derangement syndrome, along with "March For Our Lives" moral panic on guns (the media was pushing and effectively promoting mass shootings), along with the height of the "Women's March" and the #MeToo movement.
In 2016 & 2017 it wasn't at all clear whether or not the Intelligence community was prepared to co-operate with the president considering how many CIA agents were tied to the crazy shit the Obama State Department had been doing. The State Department is effectively still in direct opposition to POTUS.
God, looking back on it, it's hard to even fathom how the media was able to fit 10-20 years of hysterical screaming in just 4.
