I haven’t seen a discussion about it here yet, and wanted to add to the interaction on the board, so I was wondering how you guys feel about the game. I feel like I am about halfway through with it so far, and am enjoying it quite a bit, and have had few issues with it so far. No forced diversity and all of the characters I have met so far have interesting qualities that make them likable. When I heard complaints about Yuna and Masako, I got a bit worried, but they seem to have legitimate motivations and are well written so far. I might just suffer from being a bit of a weeb, but I enjoy the environments and gameplay, even though it can be a little repetitive. The various stances and the ability to choose to do stealth or go in “guns blazing” help diversify the gameplay enough that I don’t get bored of it. It’s one of the better new games I have played, and don’t regret picking it up.

About 8 hours in, still on Act I. It's pretty goo d, but nothing amazing. All the quests and characters are competently written, the setting feels authentic, and the combat is a well executed version of Assassin's Creed combat with a few twists to spice things up.
The best part IMO is how the game approaches challenge. Aside from a few set pieces in the story, the game presents a challenge to you, and asks you to solve it how you see fit. Do you charge your enemy head on? Do you use geurella tactics? Do you burn down the forest and leave them to die? Or do you leave your enemy be and focus on freeing slaves? All options are valid and come with their own challenges.
The worst part is definitely the stealth mechanics. Stealth is too easy as the enemies are beyond stupid out of combat, and that's without any stealth upgrades.
Overall, I recommend it.
I just finished it a few days ago and I loved it. I like how it doesn't force you into a specific play style. Outside of a few missions where you have to do stealth to not be detected you can approach situation however you want. You can take them head on, you can stealth the area and assassinate, you have a bow...bombs...throwing knives. Later you get poison on hallucination darts. You can play most situations anyway you want.
You can tell Sucker Punch poured a lot of love into the game. The landscapes, armor, and weapons all look amazing. There are a lot of historical artifacts you can find that will tell you about the Mongols. And there is no current year bullshit in it. That's probably the biggest thing.
My one criticism is that the default language and facial animations when speaking should have been in Japanese. When I started the game I chose Japanese for the audio language because I thought that's how I thought they were going to talk. But during the opening animation when they mouths were moving in English but the audio was Japanese it looked like a really bad dub. So I changed it back to English. It didn't ruin the game for me at all, but I would have thought a game set in Japan would have been default Japanese language.
I highly recommend it.
Compared to LOU2, it would have to be like playing Daikatana to Deus Ex Human Revolution. That's probably my guess.
I finished Act I a few weeks ago and yeah... I am kinda over it. Don't get me wrong, its interesting, the main plot is awesome, its beautiful, the scenery is amazing... Its also just so fucking boring. I am the neurotic type who has to clear the map and theres just so much nothing. Every time I come across yet another set of low life bandits I get annoyed at having to waste time taking them out. I've finished act 1 and yet I am pretty much maxed out and theres 2 more islands to go. I have all the stances, all the ninja tools, my weapons and armour are all maxed out, theres no reason to give a shit any more. Every time I come across a fucking haiku spot I sigh because its gonna be another 3-5 minutes wasted. When ya finished act 1 and have to go liberate the 6 farms by doing the exact same fucking thing over and over was a real mood killer to me.
It needed to be a tighter experience or have more stuff to do. If anyone who ain't played it does pick it up, I suggest you skip the extras, just mainline the missions and crank it up to its highest difficulty setting because normal gets under powered insanely early.
I liked what I saw in Act 1, but after finishing it, I find myself a little tired of the whole thing. I think I will finish it, but it's a little bit repetitive.
The story is fine, the female warriors fit into the whole story arc and don't feel out of place, as they were female warriors in Japan's history.
Everyone says the same thing pretty much, the start's a slog and then some point in the second area it just... clicks.
That said, some of the fights are pretty fun but its basically AC in japan. Parrying is fun as fuck though, and stance dancing from enemy to enemy is pretty nice.
Holy hell sniping some enemy in a watch tower so he stumbles and the fall kills him and then the little trophy pop-up was pure gold
The game is fucking gorgeous though, i'd love to see a PC port just to see how far people can push it
Yeah it is extremely beautiful. Even the rain is done extremely well, which can be hard to get right in something as detailed as Ghost. I’ve spent a decent chunk of my time playing just roaming on horseback looking at the scenery. It doesn’t really have the smoothest gameplay, but it is extremely enjoyable
I'm halfway through, but I'm mixed on it. As something that is supposed to have the feel of a Kurosawa film, it absolutely nails the aesthetic. The story isn't so great, but that's to be expected, as I never expect homages of anything to be as good as the thing it's homaging.
Gameplay. It's Assassin's Creed combat, with all the problems that come with it, namely that you are so powerful in straight up combat, there is never any reason to stealth, except by storyteller fiat such as "there are hostages, and they will be killed if you are spotted". As such, the vast majority of your stealth tricks are never used because regular combat is much faster, more efficient, and more fun than stealth.
The game is absolutely beautiful. Though on the technical side, there is no lip syncing for the Japanese dialog, if you are concerned about that type of thing. It's easily ignorable for me. Non-named NPC chatter as you're just exploring the world is also not subtitled, which is annoying as fuck if you are playing in Japanese.
