Because you’re getting a group of likeminded people together, and groupthink tends to kick in. In some cases it can be decent, e.g. here, and in other cases, you get a couple of rotten apples that affects the entire barrel as it were.
As a random example back on Reddit, it was hilarious when someone on my fave book series subreddit did an analysis of where else people posted. There were the usual other places like fantasy, other similar authors, and then the original KIA popped up as well. The book series had a very strong theme of personal freedom and generally being opposed to authority, something that apparently went along with posting on KIA back in the day before the mods went retarded, and it was kinda hilarious seeing some of the fandom implode when the data came in.
Something about personal responsability, opposing Politically Correct gaslighting and fee-feels regarding weight, and calling out the constant bullshit and pandering lies plastered all over the media drew people to both.
Oh mocking the grifters appealing to victimhood culture to demand lucrative gigs and "representation" in both.
I didn't frequent the Dresden Files sub because there were a lot of SJW-types that hung out over there (along with the incessant bullshit posts about Mantles, Titles, and similar garbage) so I must've missed that. I find it hilarious that they'd get all bent over there when they saw the KIA-posters show up in the poll results, as I'm sure the alt I used to post to KIA would have shown up in those listings.

KiA also had an overlap with Fatlogic.

Dresden, I saw that too
Yeah, it was a shitshow there with so much false info. There’s only so much arguing with idiots you can do there though.
